1 Getting into Gear What’s what in the Science lab!

2 Success Criteria You will know that you understand about science equipment when you can: Name common items used in the Science lab Draw the symbols for items of Science gear Give a use for items of Science gear

3 Beaker Used for: collecting, mixing and heating chemicals

4 Conical Flask Used to: Collect filtered liquids and to hold liquids that need swirling to mix.

5 Test-tube A Test tube is used to mix and/or heat small amounts of solids and liquids. It holds about 10mL.

6 Boiling Tube A Boiling tube is used to heat small volumes of liquids to boiling. It holds about 30mL.

7 Filter Funnel Used to separate solids from liquids and to pour liquids.

8 Evaporating dish Used to evaporate a liquid by heating over a Bunsen.

9 Tripod Used to support beakers and other apparatus (gear) for heating.

10 Gauze Mat Use: Placed on tripod to support beakers, flasks etc and to spread out the heat from the Bunsen.

11 Tongs Use: To handle hot equipment.

12 Heatproof mat Use: protects bench from hot objects, is placed under the Bunsen.

13 Retort stand Use: holds apparatus at a suitable height (used with boss and clamp).

14 Boss and Clamp Use: Securely holds apparatus to the retort and clamp stand.

15 Bunsen Burner Use: to provide the heat needed for many experiements

16 Test-tube holder Use: holds test tube or boiling tube when heating it over a Bunsen flame.

17 Measuring Cylinder Used for Measuring the volume of a liquid

18 Activity Move around the room in pairs and name the pieces of gear on the side benches.
