3. The Problem(s) in Ireland Push to produce PhDs… Shift of emphasis to translational/applied research at the expense of basic science Neuroscience in Ireland is relatively young, but we punch well above our weight We are producing – and losing – some of our best scientists

Funding implications Change in funding policy Trend toward funding “applied” or “commercial” research rather than both basic & applied Strategy of priority areas appears directed at job creation, spinout companies & patents, economic growth This is not the job of science Neglecting fundamental research not sustainable – balance is needed

6. What we can do… There is a lot we can do to tackle these problems: Inform & Educate the public about what we do and why it’s important. Inform & Educate politicians about it; open dialogues. Engage with business, industry & philanthropy more. Become individually more active and engaged in advocacy.
