Peculiar People 1 Peter 2:9 By Pastor Tony Raker PC way of life Nov 16, 2014 Part II

Peculiar People 1 Peter 2:9 By Pastor Tony Raker Nov 9, 2014

1 Peter 2:9: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light;”

Scriptural Comparison: In combing Scripture related to our relationship with God, we come across four categories which lend themselves directly to our 1 Peter text with respect to Biblical definition as to our “peculiar” state: characteristics, calling, race and Christlinkeness. This lesson deals with:

The calling of the Christian 1. Undeserving 1 Corinthians 1:26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Mark 2:16-18 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

The calling of the Christian 2. Enlightened Ephesians 1:18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, "Come unto me... I will give you rest."

The calling of the Christian 3. Prisoner Ephesians 4:1 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,

The calling of the Christian 4. Engaged Philippians 3:14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

The calling of the Christian 5. Reflect 1 Thessalonians 2:12 we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

The calling of the Christian 6. Gain 2 Thessalonians 2:14 To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The calling of the Christian 7. Holy 2 Timothy 1:9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,

The calling of the Christian 8. Partaker Hebrews 3:1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,

The calling of the Christian 9. Suffer 1 Peter 5:10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

The calling of the Christian 10. Practice : 2 Peter 1:10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.

Conclusion: Out of His heart of love there was a divine decision in eternity past which is referred to in our text as our being chosen. The original act in our salvation was with God, not with man. When God chose us to salvation, He did not choose us because we were lovely. He did not choose us because He saw something in us that He did not see in others. But He chose us because He loved us.

There is a mystery connected with this revelation that no one can ever completely fathom. Why did God choose us? We never will completely understand it, but the glorious fact is that He did. In Ephesians 1:4, this choice is described: “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.” The precious truth is that God chose us, therefore we are a peculiar people.
