Teacher instructions No printing required, need paper, pencil, and calculator (allow students to use the calculator in their cell phones if needed) Have students write down the conversion factors on slide 5 as they will be needing some of them to solve the two problems. In slide 6, remind students that in order to get the answer they must first multiply all the number on top times the GIVEN. Then divide that number by the product of all the numbers on the bottom. The students have notes over this concept and should be able to tutor each other. Also, let them know that in order to get the credit they must show their work.

It’s all about the UNITS! Units are essential to measurements as they describe what has been measured. For example, which one would you rather have: 100,000 As you can see numbers without units have little meaning!! Beans?? Pencils? Dollars?

4= 1 dollar 10= 1 dollar 20= 1 dollar 100= 1 dollar Conversion Factors BASIC UNIT All basic units have larger and smaller units which help make measurements less complicated and faster.

Going from one unit to another… Dimensional Analysis is the process that is used to convert units. For this process, you need conversion factors. For example, for time these would be examples of some conversion factors. –1 yr = 12 months or 1 yr = 365 days –1 month = 30 days –1 day = 24 hrs –1 hr = 60 min –1 min = 60 secs

*Take given unit and multiply it times the conversion factor(s) between wanted unit and given unit. For example, some studies suggest we spend 13 years watching TV over a lifetime. How many seconds is that? Remember, you must place units so that they cancel each other, EXCEPT for the wanted unit. 504,576,000 seconds! Conversion Factors Given unit Wanted unit

Reminder!!! The following activity will be counted as a grade in your science class. Turn it in to your science teacher.

Now you try it! SHOW YOUR WORK! Convert the following using dimensional analysis. In addition, use a grammatically correct sentence to describe how you solved each problem. How many minutes will it take you to complete HS if you complete it in 4 years? Students spend on average 180 days per year in school. How many minutes will you have to work earning minimum wage to earn 32,000 dollars? 7.25 dollars = 1 hour
