2. Jesus Promised “Another Helper” “Helper” due to the nature of the promise. –Origin is in a word used five times in the New Testament. John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7; 1 John 2:1. First four in regard to Holy Spirit, last one to Jesus.

3. May be used as: –Comforter (KJV, ASV). –Helper (NKJV, NASB, ESV). –Counselor (NIV). –Advocate (KJV, ASV, NKJV, NASB, ESV).

4. Meaning: –Strong – Advocate, intercessor. –Thayer – Called to one’s side. –RWP – Was used for legal assistant. –VWS – One who is called to another’s side to aid him.

5. “Another”. –Like Jesus (Jn. 16:7). –“He may abide with you forever” (re. Matt. 28:20; Heb. 13:5; cf. Deut. 31:6; Josh. 1:5). Spiritual gifts will cease (1 Cor. 13:8). The Holy Spirit remains.

6. Permanence of God, Jesus, and/or the Holy Spirit is dependent on the word that all three have delivered. –Eternal beings have no end. –The knowledge of them is based on a permanent word (Matt. 24:35; 1 Peter 1:25).

7. The Business Of The Helper Delivery of the word. –John 14:26. –John 16:13-14. Paul also affirms this (1 Cor. 2:9-10, 13).

8. The Helper Will Convict The World This is impossible to deny (Jn. 16:7-8). –The word is the sword of the Spirit (Eph. 6:17). –That word is the power unto salvation (Rom. 1:16). The Helper will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. –Where exactly are these three found? –In the word of God. –To be convicted is to be moved to action (Acts 2:37).

9. It is the word of God that tells of sin (1 Jn. 3:4; Rom. 3:23; 6:23). It is the word of God that tells of righteousness (Rom. 1:17; 10:4). It is the word of God that tells of judgment (Jn. 12:31; Jn. 12:48).
