3 Course Objectives 1. Introducing key clinical and technical concepts prior to the start of clerkships 2. Mitigate concerns of medical students prior to their clerkships 3. Develop a course geared towards all medical students, not just ones interested in a surgical career

4 Other institutions Columbia – Meet the Surgeons, technical skills labs, surgical interest group (Kirkham 2006) Stanford – Preclinical course with lectures from different specialties, 3 technical skills sessions (Riboh 2007) UCSF – OR assist (Cloyd 2008) Johns Hopkins – CT research (Allen 2007) All courses cater to medical students considering a surgical career

5 MS3 Survey What concerns do you have about your surgical clerkship? All students are most concerned about Fatigue, Hours, Clerkship performance, Lack of knowledge, and physical hardship

6 MS3 Survey What would you like to learn about during your surgical clerkship? All students would like to learn technical skills, procedures, and patient management. Students interested in surgery want to learn about the lifestyle of surgeons and surgical practice.

7 Course structure 18 Sessions total 7 Technical skills sessions 5 Didactic sessions 4 Case presentations 2 Panels Schedule and syllabus are included in your packet

8 Instructors Course Directors:  Amita Shah, MD - resident  Kent Van Sickle, MD – associate professor Instructors  Dept. of Surgery Attendings and staff  Surgery Chief residents, Surgery residents  OR staff We are all volunteering our time!

9 Requirements No more than three excused absences  Contact Amita if you are going to be absent  The course is cumulative Class time is limited – outside preparation and practice will be necessary Participate in surveys and testing Comments and suggestions are welcome

10 Surveys Survey #1 – Pre-course attitudes and perceptions Class surveys – after every session  On SurveyMonkey – PLEASE do this. Survey #2 – Post-course attitudes and perceptions We may have follow-up during 3 rd and 4 th years.

11 Technical skills preparation Videos Handouts Online resources We will either give you or direct you to the different resources before the sessions

12 Shadowing & Research Opportunities are available, you just have to find them - We’ll help General surgery  Trauma  OR cases  Rounding Other specialties

13 Session #2: Knot tying Thursday, October 8 th, 2009 12pm to 1pm Animal labs on 1 st floor medical school Please prepare for the session  Videos  Handouts  Practice Rope
