1 o R&D programme to test detector concepts being developed for neutrino factory: wrong sign muon “Golden” signature R&D Programme MIND & TASD 15 m 100 m Magnetised Iron Neutrino Detector (MIND) Totally Active Scintillating Detector (TASD)

2 o R&D on photon detector technology o Measurements we want to make: ̶ Test different photon detector technologies: Avalanche Photodiodes (APD), Geiger Mode APDs (GMAPD), Silicon photomutiplier (SiPMT), Multi Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC), Multi-anode Photomultiplier Tubes (MaPMT), Hybrid Photon Detectors (HPD). ̶ Measure light output, PE yield, quantum efficiency, cross-talk and effect on resolution in real operating conditions ̶ Put different PD in test beam Photon Detector R&D

3 o R&D on extruded scintillator: attenuation as function of length, fiber insertion, optimal geometry (ie. square vs triangular or segmentation and sampling rate) Scintillator R&D Not necessarily at test beam Important for very long bars good Eg: MINOS

4 o RPC vs scintillator Readout technology MINOS CALDET INO: 67%/sqrt(E)+10% RPC prototype for the India Neutrino Observatory (INO)

5 Prototype detector oBuild prototype to put in test beam to test all of the above, validate Monte Carlo simulations and optimise design oUse of INO test stand in a beam environment?  Other magnets at CERN? How big do we make test beam detector? Default is ~2x2x4 m 3 ie. ~10 -3 of full MIND Important to contain  < 2 GeV

6 Test Beam Facility oRequest test beam time at CERN (ie East Area at the CERN PS) for dedicated Neutrino Detector R&D Need to build up infrastructure: magnet, beam telescopes, … Neutrino detector test facility: resource for all neutrino detector R&D

7 MIND (and TASD) Tests oMeasurements we want to make: ̶ Muon identification: building particle ID likelihood functions based on test beam ID Measure PID eff. vs length of track ̶ Charge identification (as function of B-field and length of track) ̶ Optimal segmentation: transverse and longitudinal

8 Neutrino Factory Near Detector R&D oNear detectors: need to measure neutrino flux and relevant background for far detector signatures (ie. charm production, charge mis-identification) oR&D programme 1)Vertex detector options: hybrid pixels, monolithic pixels (ie. CCD, Monolithic Active Pixels MAPS or DEPFET), strips or 3D detectors. Synergy with other fields such as Linear Collider and LHC upgrade developments. Put different detector types in test beam. 2)Tracking: scintillation tracker (same composition as far detector). R&D should be similar to far detector. 3)Other issues relating to near detectors: particle identification, calorimetry, magnet.
