2 The Golden Ratio or… The Golden Section is a great starting point to creating aesthetically pleasing visuals and is also known as Golden Proportion, Golden Mean, Golden Ratio and Divine Proportion because of its frequent appearance in nature. “Phi” is the Greek symbol for this numeric relationship. Phi or “ the Golden Section” is division of space according to a mathematical value 1:1.618 or to be more exact: 1:

3 In Nature The golden ratio has been used to analyze the proportions of natural objects. These proportions have been applied to a variety man made creations in architecture, music, painting, and design.

4 A Brief History… (490–430 BC) Phidias made the Parthenon with may uses of the GR (1170–1250) Fibonacci approaches the golden ratio asymptotically. (1550–1631) Michael Maestlin publishes the first known approximation of the golden ratio as a decimal fraction (.618). (1452 –1519) Leonardo da Vinci uses the Golden Ration extensively in his works.

5 Fibonacci The relationship of the golden section and the Fibonacci series is within the numbers. Starting at 0 and 1 and adding the last two numbers to the next equation. This example explains what I mean 0 + 1 = 1 1 + 1 = 2 1 + 2 = 3 2 + 3 = 5 3 + 5 = 8 5 + 8 = 13 = 21 The larger the pair of sums grow the ratio between them approaches Phi or 1.618 which is the golden number.
