Additional Notes
2
What is the total energy of motion in the molecules of a substance? Thermal Energy
3
What is the average amount of energy of motion of each molecule of a substance? Temperature
4
What is a thin glass tube with a bulb on the end that contains a liquid and is used to measure temperature? Thermometer
5
1- What is temperature? the average amount of energy of motion of each molecule of a substance
6
2- Describe how a thermometer works. When the air temperature increases, the liquid in the bulb of the thermometer expands and rises up the column. When the air temperature decreases, the liquid contracts and moves down the column.
7
3a- Name the 3 ways that heat can be transferred. Radiation- electromagnetic waves through space (from point A to point B) Conduction- direct contact Convection- movement through a fluid (anything that flows)
8
3b- How do the 3 work together to heat the troposphere? The sun heats the Earth through radiation. The air near Earth’s surface is warmed through radiation and conduction. When the air near the ground is heated, it becomes less dense and rises in convection currents.
9
4- How does a fireplace heat a room? Radiation
