Full Name: Henry Gwyn Jeffreys Moseley (Also known as Harry Moseley) Born: 23rd November, 1887; Deceased: 10th August, 1915 When World War I broke out in Western Europe, Henry Moseley left his work at the University of Oxford and volunteered for the Royal Engineers of the British Army Fields of Study: Physics and Chemistry at Trinity College, University of Oxford, and the University of Manchester

Moseley’s Law concerns the characteristics of x-rays that are emitted by atoms, he was able to show that the frequencies of certain characteristic x-rays emitted from chemical elements directly related to and supported Can Den Broek and Bohr’s model of the atom that stated that the atomic number equals the number of positive charges in the nucleus of the atom (Protons) Moseley became interested in the Bohr Model of the Atom after conversations with Niels Bohr after 1913 – This led to his interest in finding more relationships with the atomic numbers and possibly rearranging the periodic table.

Moseley concluded that when the square root of the frequencies of characteristic x-rays were plotted against the atomic number of that specific element, a straight line on the graph was obtained, proving a direct relationship between x-ray frequencies, protons of an element and the elements atomic number. Moseley concluded by this finding that atomic weight was not the significant player in the periodic law like other scientists such as Mendeleev and Meyers had proposed.

When Moseley rearranged the periodic table with atoms arranged according to increasing atomic number, the flaws and gaps in Mendeleev’s proposed periodic table had disappeared. Moseley not only established the atomic number of elements as a measureable experimental quality, he also gave it a physical meaning (The number of protons in the Atom’s nucleus.)
