Presentation on theme: "Oneone Objective: To gather scientific information in order to analyze the composition of Earth's atmosphere. Atmosphere Note: What gases are in the atmosphere?"— Presentation transcript:

oneone Objective: To gather scientific information in order to analyze the composition of Earth's atmosphere. Atmosphere Note: What gases are in the atmosphere? Drill: 1. Get a new Lesson Sheet from the SET. 2. Read the objective. 3. Complete Activity 1, #1. WE-1

oneone Atmosphere: the mixture of gases that surround a planet Can you use the definition of atmosphere to develop a definition of hydrosphere? Hydrosphere: all of the water that covers the Earth (or any planet)…hmmm WE-1

oneone Activity 2: Let’s Get Thinking You have just been hired as the new PAD Master (Planetary Atmospheric Designer). You are planning to construct a new planet to be modeled after Earth. You need to order 100 million cubic meters of gases for the atmosphere. Decide what gases you are going to order and how much of each gas you need. Then calculate the percent of each gas in the atmosphere. WE-1

oneone Explain the reasoning for your decisions. WE-1

oneone Read pp. 6-9 in Prentice Hall Science Explorer: Weather and Climate. You may also use the handout from class. WE-1

oneone Identify the 4 main gases that are found in Earth’s Atmosphere? Provide the percent by volume in which these gases are found in dry air. a. Nitrogen78% b. Oxygen21% c. Argon0.93% d. Carbon Dioxide0.038% e. Other Gases0.032% WE-1

oneone Objective: To gather scientific information in order to analyze the composition of Earth's atmosphere. Atmosphere Note: What gases are in the atmosphere? Drill: 1. Take out your reading and your Activity Sheet. 2. Proofread your paper. Are you proud of your work? WE-1

oneone Besides gases what are some of the other components of Earth’s atmosphere? Water Vapor Dust Salt Smoke WE-1

oneone Describe two or more ways in which the atmosphere is important to life on Earth. 1.Provides the gases that living things need to survive 2.Heat is trapped allowing for liquid water 3.Meteoroids burn up in the atmosphere. 4.Dangerous radiation is blocked. WE-1

oneone Provide information about of each of the following gases found in Earth’s atmosphere. Nitrogen: Needed for growth and repair of body cells Oxygen: Needed for burning fuels Needed by plants and animals Ozone protects against ultraviolet rays Carbon Dioxide: Needed by plants for producing food WE-1

oneone Explain the role of water vapor in the Earth’s atmosphere. Water vapor in the atmosphere contributes to our weather. Clouds form when water vapor condenses. This leads to precipitation which helps to circulate Earth’s waters. WE-1
