4 Let’s review. How many particles (of anything) are in a mole? – 6.02 x 10 23 Who’s number is this? – Avogadro's number The mass of 1 mole of any substance is equal to… – The molar mass of that substance.

5 Molar Mass (MM) – what is it? It is similar to atomic mass. We can say 1 mole of any element “weighs” its atomic mass in grams. The atomic mass of carbon is ___________ amu. So, the molar mass of carbon is 12.01 grams per 1 mole C. (Keep molar mass to 2 decimals for this unit.) 12.011

7 How to determine the Molar Mass of Compounds - C 6 H 12 O 6 Subscripts provide a relative ratio of moles of atoms in a molecule (or ions in a formula unit). In 1 mol of C 6 H 12 O 6 there are: ________ mol of carbon ________ mol of hydrogen ________ mol of oxygen

8 Molar Mass of Compounds Multiply the molar mass of each element by the number of moles of that element in the chemical formula. C: 6 mol C x 12.01 g/mol C = 72.07 g H: 12 mol H x 1.01 g/mol H = 12.10 g O: 6 mol O x 16.00g/mol O = 96.00 g sum total = 180.16 g / 1 mol C 6 H 12 O 6 Molar mass (MM) has the unit g/ 1 mol or g/ mol.
