Fifth Grade Math

Spatial Measurement - Length and Width; Area and Perimeter; Scaling Metric Measurement - Metric system and Unit Conversions Time/Temperature - Reading a clock and adding hours/minutes; Reading a thermometer and difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit Calculating Measurement - Estimate, Use formulas, and Convert

Creating: Construct a scaled room including common items, i.e. bed, dresser, desk, etc., on graph paper Evaluating: Find an example of why a person needs to know lengths, perimeter, and area during everyday life. Analyzing: Comparing units of measure, i.e. inches and feet, and knowing which to use in a situation. Applying: Finding the area of objects around the class room. Understanding: Learning how to use lengths to find the perimeter or area. Remembering: I will bring measuring tools to class and teach which unit of measure goes with each and how to read it.

BOTH Directed Instruction- Drill and Practice with the metric system and conversions; Learning formulas; First introduction to new topics Constructivist Strategy- Let them work in groups; Discover their own objects and it’s measurements; Show what they have learned without tests

(4.11) Measurement. The student selects and uses appropriate units and procedures to measure weight and capacity. The student is expected to: (A)Estimate and measure weight using standard units including ounces, pounds, grams, and kilograms; (B)Estimate and measure capacity using standard units including milliliters, liters, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. (4.12) Measurement. The student applies measurement concepts. The student is expected: to measure to solve problems involving length, including perimeter, time, temperature, and area.
