2 Voluntary Sector or Third Sector What does it mean?

3 1.Statutory Sector public organisations such as county councils, the National Health Service (NHS), police and emergency services, state schools

4 2.Private Sector businesses, retailers, public limited company (PLC), self employed

5 3.Third Sector charities, social enterprises, community interest companies (CIC)

6 Examples of Third Sector in Hampshire National organisations  Barnardo’s, Scout Association, Action for Children, Prince’s Trust, Duke of Edinburgh, Catch22 County Wide (and regional) organisations  Youth Options, Youth Clubs Hampshire and Isle of Wight, YOU Trust Local organisations  Moving on Project, Off the Record, Step by Step, Motiv8, Neighbourhood associations

7 Does voluntary mean un-paid? Typically voluntary sector organisations, including charities, get their money from a number of different places: Central Government (Public) e.g. Department for Education, Home Office, Department for Health, Cabinet Office Local Government (Public) e.g. Hampshire County Council, Borough Council, Hampshire Constabulary, Local Primary Care Trust Charitable Trusts (Private) connected to companies or individuals Lottery (Public/Private) similar e.g. Children In Need, Comic Relief Individuals (Private) can be wealthy individuals e.g. Bill Gates or from anyone including one off donations and regular monthly standing orders Trading (Private) providing a service or item where any surplus (profit) goes to benefit the charity, can include charity shops Events (Private) typically through sale of tickets

8 Why have a voluntary sector? Driven by an ethos or set of values Not restricted by statutory regulations Able to attract income from a variety of sources Does not have to produce profit for shareholders Governed by volunteers (trustees) Makes a difference Definition of voluntary? Doing something out of choice rather than obligation
