3 Think-Group-Share 1. “We lead the world in healthcare because we believe in a system of private medicine that encourages innovation and change.” –President Bush 2. “It’s absolutely excessive.” [referring to our healthcare in the U.S.] 3. “Medicine has become a business.” 4. “Physicians are reimbursed for doing things, we are not reimbursed for talking people.” 5. “The current medical system…. is designed to turn a profit. It’s designed to meet the needs of the people in power.” “The United States doesn’t really have better care than other Western democracies… it just has more care.” 7. “They say their interested in quality and lower cost and providing healthcare for everybody and I want you to have the same healthcare that I have as a Congressmen… I want to know what that is?” Each table receives one quote, from the preview to MDM they just watched. (10) -Think (silent written reflection): What does this quote mean? What does it tell you about our healthcare system? - Group share: Discuss interpretations & ideas - Class share-out: Each group reads quote, then explains it’s significance. 15m

Why could this be harmful? Beneficial? 50:12 – How did the face of medicine change over the 20th century? 51:41 – What is one reason, according to Dr. Berwick, for the outrageous expense of our healthcare today? 1:15:25 – What is the conflict that doctors today face? Students will get a handout of these guiding questions to watch. Segments of the film will be shown (corresponding to the times listed above) & at certain points the film will be paused for discussion, written reflection, & to refer back to the glossary of terms provided to students. 25m
