5 Purpose * What do you want to happen when someone reads your writing? *Determine if there a specific type of writing you need to produce. (Narrative, Descriptive, Expository, Persuasive) Audience * Decide who you intend to read your writing. * Think about if you will need to write UP to your audience or DOWN to your audience. Topic Decide exactly what your topic will be. Think about what your audience probably already knows or doesn’t know about your topic that may need explaining. 7 Spelling Mark words that MIGHT be misspelled. Substitute with another word - OR – Get the correct spelling from someone or a dictionary Capitalize DO Capitalize the 1st letter of 1st word of EVERY sentence. DO capitalize proper nouns (names of people, places, things). DON’T capitalize types of things. Omissions Look for missing words you meant to write, but accidentally left out. Punctuation * Punctuation mark at the end of every sentence (., ? ! ) Ear Read you paper out loud. Listen for sentences that don’t make sense; fix them. SCOPE editing strategy
