5 Overview Rationale — Effective bench management can be the difference between winning and losing tight games; the speed of the game requires that coaches be well organized throughout games and know exactly how they will manage the bench

6 Overview Objectives — To ensure that delegates can do the following by the end of the workshop: Understand the importance of planning for games State the factors in successful bench/game management Establish clear roles and responsibilities for bench staff During games, communicate clearly with players about bench issues Understand the skills and strategies for changing lines, handling special teams, and handling special situations Implement strategies to handle team discipline during games

9 Bench Management Pregame management consists of: Prescouting the other team Analyzing video Preparing game-plan cards Developing and implementing pregame routines Clarifying coaching responsibilities, including specifying who will communicate line changes and adjustments to players and who will communicate with groups of players Specifying the functions of support staff Outlining a strategy for the game

10 Bench Management Game management consists of: Disciplining coaches, players, and support staff on the bench as needed Communicating line changes Communicating with groups of players Motivating players Observing the game Making in-game adjustments Communicating adjustments to players Analyzing video between periods Communicating with players between perio ds

11 Bench Management Postgame management includes the following: Reviewing your team’s performance Reviewing the other team’s strategies Comparing the performance of the two teams Evaluating individual players’ performance Evaluating your team’s strategy for the game and your team’s implementation of the strategy Evaluating your performance and that of your coaching staff Deciding who will talk to the team about the game and what he or she will say to the team Giving players an opportunity to speak

12 Bench Management Small group task activities: 1.Process for changing lines: Who controls line changes? When do you change lines? What gates to use? Who uses what gates? When do you allow players to go over the boards? Changing lines during a power play? Changing lines during a penalty kill? 6 th attacker?

14 Game Management Complete the activity in section 7.2 of the Coach Workbook.

15 Scouting In your groups, detail the strengths and weaknesses you would be looking for in the area you have been assigned, and how you would modify your team’s play. For the sake of the exercise, explain how you would use the scouting information.

16 Statistics In your same groups, discuss what you feel are appropriate statistics to record in Ringette. For each statistic indicate a positive way to use the information gathered.
