CM-220 Unit 1 Seminar Margaret Baker

Seminar Rules Try to be on time. Be respectful. We will have many people attending, so stay on task. If you enter late, please don’t say “hello” to everyone. If your instructor misses a question, please ask it again. Participate when questions are asked or if you have a question.

Contact Information for Cm220-02 and 07 mbaker@kaplan.edu Pull my name down from the email section of the class. Remember that you can send mail from here, but not receive or answer other email. Webmail –check this often. AIM username: mbakeroffice

Not in sections 02 or 07? Look for contact information in the syllabus. Watch the grade book to be sure grades are posted appropriately.

My schedule I grade discussion work before Saturday. Seminars will be graded within 48 hours. I will return your project work within 5 days of the due date or 5 days after the work is posted for late work.

Your schedule Getting behind is the single biggest threat to successful completion of the course. It is best to have time everyday to check in with the class, read, do a little research etc. However, if you cannot login every day, be sure you have a set schedule. Let me know ASAP when you have questions about an assignment (after you are sure you have read the assignment instructions)

Tips for Success Know your resources. Become familiar with the ‘Course Home’ section of the class. Become familiar with the library as soon as you are able. Read the syllabus carefully. Visit the Writing Center. Make time in your writing process to use the submission service. Do not ever be afraid to call tech support for a technical problem. I cannot help with any problems attaching files, opening files etc.

Tips for Success (continued) Use ‘Doc Sharing’. I submit items there that help support your work. Read the instructions to every assignment carefully---and follow them. In fact, make reading the project instructions the very first thing you do in a lesson week. Know how you will be graded. Read the grading rubric for each assignment in the syllabus. Know the point value of each assignment.

Feedback I will provide feedback on project assignments. This constructive criticism is meant to give you things to think about or focus on for the next assignment. I may also point your to source in the classroom or outside sources that can help you. Be sure to read this feedback.

A Few Common Mistakes Submitting an assignment that is not in Word Fudging on the margins to meet the required paper length Not using APA citations within an essay or assignment Attaching the wrong file in the dropbox Attaching blank documents in the dropbox Asking for help for missed assignments in Unit 9 or 10. Not emailing me when a late assignment is submitted. Emailing me one hour before an assignment is due, in anguish. Providing lots of details about the anguish, but none about the writing problems that are the source.

Formal Writing What are some characteristics of formal writing? What are some examples of formal writing? When should you use formal writing at Kaplan?
