Grade 2 Wendy Mason

Objectives Introduce the three states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas) Talk about the characteristics of each Talk about the chemical properties of each (i.e. what the atoms in each are doing) Relate these to the Water Cycle Play the Solid/Liquid/Gas game

The Three States of Matter Solid Holds its shape Atoms have little/no room to move Liquid Conforms to a container or flows freely Atoms are moving more, but still relatively together

Three States of Matter cont. Gas Only can conform to a completely closed container Atoms are moving all over the place, freely, making a gas hard to see

The Water Cycle Water can go from a solid to a liquid to a gas by using heat or cooling. This can change other things to different states as well. Heating opens up the atoms to give them more room to move around (from ice to water, from water to vapor) Cooling brings the atoms together to make matter more stable and the atoms less free (vapor to water, water to ice)

The Game Gather the children in a circle, hands joined When you call “solid”, the children cannot let go of their hands, cannot move their feet, but can still wiggle their bodies When you call “liquid”, the children can move their feet but must stay joined at the hands When you call “gas”, the children can run freely, but must join back together quickly in when you call “solid” or “liquid”

TEKS (8) Science concepts. The student distinguishes between living organisms and nonliving objects. The student is expected to: (A) identify characteristics of living organisms; and (B) identify characteristics of nonliving objects. (10) Science concepts. The student knows that the natural world includes rocks, soil, water, and gases of the atmosphere. The student is expected to: (A) describe and illustrate the water cycle;
