3. What can we do at home? Where do children use the technology? Develop trust so they will feel comfortable talking to you if they accidentally come across anything inappropriate or receive inappropriate attention from someone. Almost half of UK children go online in their bedroom or another private room and half at a friend’s house. Are filtering systems in place across all devices? How long are children spending interacting with any given device? Draw up a set of family guidelines together. Constantly talk to them about what they are doing and do some activities together.

4. Social Networking/Gaming Sites Is the site age appropriate? Who owns photos published online? Are children chatting outside of the games room? Who to? Are privacy settings set to the appropriate level? Be careful about what photos are made public online.

5. Cyber Bullying What is it? Receiving nasty e-mails or text messages. Receiving abusive phone calls. Messages/photos/videos of a derogatory nature being sent round to others. Message boards/blogs containing offensive material about someone.

6. How would you know it’s happening? Change in children’s behaviour Quiet and withdrawn. Not wanting to go out/go to school. Not interested in their usual hobbies. Moody or unusually snappy. Significant decrease in a child’s academic performance.

7. What can we do about Cyber Bullying? Constantly talk to your child to develop trust so they feel safe in talking about anything that upsets them. Keep all evidence e.g. e-mails, texts, voicemails. Contact the website/phone company that any offensive material appears on. Contact the police and/or Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP).

8. Mobile Devices What age is appropriate to have a mobile phone? Why do children have them? How do you monitor how they are used?

9. What are the risks of having a mobile phone/device? Possibility of being mugged. Giving out their phone no. too willingly to others who they may not know very well. What do those people then do with their number? Accessing the internet unsupervised. What are they doing online? Possibility of sending/receiving inappropriate photos and messages. One school in Ealing says children are not allowed mobile phones. If parents are worried about their child’s safety then they should pick them up from school.
