3 Era of Good Feelings Name for President Monroe's two terms Period of strong nationalism – War of 1812 helps united Americans – Future President Andrew Jackson wins major military victory in New Orleans against the British – Star Spangled Banner is written Fewer partisan conflicts – Federalist Party dies (because they opposed the War of 1812 and almost separated from the U.S.!!) Economic growth – Roads, canals, and bridges are built – Growth of industry Territorial expansion – Americans moving west – Florida added to the U.S.

4 Monroe Doctrine Foreign policy intended to limit European influence in the Western Hemisphere. Warned Europe against any further colonization in Latin America. Resulted from the close geographic relationship between the U.S. and Latin America. U.S. increased enforcement of the Monroe Doctrine during the late 19th and early 20 th century (Teddy Roosevelt)
