5 You are what you eat…. Why nutrition Matters Nutrition – The process by which your body takes in and uses food. Nutrients – Substances in food that your body needs to grow, to repair itself, and to supply you with energy. THE THREE FUNCTIONS OF NUTRIENTS Provide EnergyPromote GrowthRegulate Body Functions Carbs, Proteins, and LipidsProteins, Lipids, Vitamins, Minerals, and Water

6 Calories What is a calorie? A calorie is a unit of heat used to measure the energy your body uses and the energy it receives from food. Calories provide the energy that your body uses to perform daily functions. From exercising to your heart beating and breathing.

7 Importance of proper nutrition Importance at a young age: Provides healthy growth and development. Fuel for physical activities, mental alertness, and looking and feeling your best. Lifelong Importance: Help avoid unhealthful weight gain and disease such as type II Diabetes. Also Lower risks of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, stroke, and osteoporosis.

8 What Influences your Food Choices? How do most people look at food and what they should eat? What tastes good? Our daily needs (food pyramid) What our body needs for the activities we have performed (weightlifters, marathon runners, etc.) People eat for two reasons: 1. Hunger – The natural physical drive to eat, prompted by the body’s need for food. 2. Appetite – The physiological desire for food.

9 Foods and Emotions People eat in response to stress, frustration, loneliness, and sadness. Some people may eat out of boredom. Some may do “mindless eating” – snacking on chips while watching a tv show. Eating with emotions can typically lead to weight gain; however, someone who doesn’t eat because of being upset could not get the proper nutrients there body needs.

10 Food and Your Environment Family and Culture – If your family eats most meals at home, this will influence what you eat. You may prefer certain foods because of your family’s cultural influence. Friends – If your friends always go for pizza after school, you’ll probably eat pizza too. Your might try new foods with friends, including foods from other cultures. Time and Money – People with busy schedules may choose foods that are quick and easy to prepare, such as convenience foods and microwavable meals. Cost can also be a factor. For instance, you may not eat expensive steaks very often. Advertising – Advertisers try to influence your decisions about food. They hope that an ad from a juicy hamburger will send you out to the nearest fast-food window.
