1 What does the day consist of for Reception children?

2 Our Typical Day!

3 Phonics Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully. They are taught how to: recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes; identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make - such as ‘sh’ or ‘oo’; and blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word. Our phonics sessions last around 20 minutes involving: Revisit Teach Practise Apply

4 Revisit: Recall phase 2 letters and sounds learnt so far using flashcards. Teach: Teach phoneme ‘f’ using action and song. Model writing on the board and ask children to write with their magic finger. Then ask children to write the grapheme on their boards. Practice: Explain we have some objects the aliens want us to bring to the tea party but we need to write the words: fan, fig, flag. Apply: Play buried treasure together. Children to blend the words and decide whether they are real words or alien words.

9 What to do if your child doesn’t want to do any work at home? Don’t make an issue out of it. If they don’t want to do it, don’t force it. Make it fun! Think of alternative ways to suit your child. Organise a treasure hunt around the house on a rainy day. Give your child the challenge of finding as many things that begin with ‘a’.
