2 Let’s review the structure of the atom 12 p + 12 n 0 An atom consists of the following things: Nucleus with protons and neutrons Electron cloud with electrons on the orbitals So why are these electrons a different color???

3 Valence Electrons These electrons are the ones on the outermost shell of an atom (on the last orbital) that are involved in bonding. An atom may only have a MAXimum of 8 valence electrons. Having 8 valence electrons is called an octet.

5 Notice how the location of the element reveals how many valence electrons it has

6 Now that you know all this, how can you use this information to draw Lewis Electron Dot Diagram Example: Draw the Lewis Electron Dot Diagram for the element Nitrogen. 1 st : Figure out what Representative group Nitrogen is in. That will tell you how many valence electrons it has. It’s in group 5 so it has 5 valence electrons. 2 nd : Write the symbol of the element. N 3 rd : Draw the valence electrons around the symbol starting from the top and in a clockwise direction. Remember, NEVER more than eight and you must go around the symbol once before you put them in pairs.
