Economics Career Office

 With widespread use of technology it is harder to meet potential employers face to face  A chance to get valuable information about a company, career path and available positions

 Research which companies will attend the fair  Use the database from the career fair site to review jobs by role  Look beyond those firms that list “economics” as a preferred major – some firms think that business and economics are joint programs  Go to their websites to learn more about them  Check their career opportunities  This will help you figure out how to present yourself and questions to ask

 Determine how much time you will have at the fair and your organizations to visit  Determine a first and second-tier list of organizations and which are “must-sees”  Create a powerful, concise 30 second (modified 2 minute pitch) in your own voice Describe:  Your skills and background  Work that interests you  Why you’re interested in that company

 Sample Questions:  “I was very impressed to learn about your company’s initiatives in corporate social responsibility. Could you tell me more about it?”  “I read that you’re expanding in Latin America, which is my expertise, could you tell me more about it?”  “I’ve heard your work culture is teamwork- oriented, which suits me well, could you tell me how you assess this in candidates?”

 Plan your day  Prioritize the companies you want to see  Bring your customized résumé or résumés  Arrive 15 minutes early to relax  Maximize your time while waiting in line:  Review your questions  Make notes  Review materials and network with people in line

 Present a professional image:  Conservative suits or professional dress  Portfolio with at least 20 copies of resume  Bring business cards if you have them  Wear a nametag if you have one  Smile, firm handshake, good eye contact  Call person by last name: Mr. or Ms. until they suggest otherwise  Ask for the recruiter’s business card and any other materials available  Smile, thank them and shake hands again  Ask if it’s ok for you to follow up in a couple of weeks/ask what would be the best way for you to follow up with them after the fair

 Send a quick email note of thanks within a couple of days. Ask if you can meet with them to further discuss opportunities, if appropriate  Meet with alumni or friends at U.Va. who have experiences with your organizations of interest  Learn how you may become a more competitive candidate/present yourself well with the organization  Learn more about the organization to determine if it is a good choice for you
