1 American Nuclear Society Aerospace Nuclear Science & Technology Technical Group Presentation to the ANS Board of Directors Shannon Bragg-Sitton, PhD June 9, 2005 2005 ANS Annual Meeting (San Diego)

2 Division/TG Mission Organized to promote the advancement of knowledge in the use of nuclear science and technologies in the aerospace application. Specialized nuclear-based technologies and applications are needed to advance the state-of-the-art in aerospace design, engineering and operations to explore planetary bodies in our solar system and beyond, plus enhance the safety of air travel, especially high speed air travel. Areas of interest will include but are not limited to the creation of nuclear- based power and propulsion systems, multifunctional materials to protect humans and electronic components from atmospheric, space, and nuclear power system radiation, human factor strategies for the safety and reliable operation of nuclear power and propulsion plants by non-specialized personnel and more.

3 TG Governance: Executive Committee Structure Officers:currently 1 year terms –Chair:Shannon Bragg-Sitton –Vice-Chair:Pablo Rubiolo –Secretary:Jon Carmack –Treasurer:Robert Singleterry Discussing the potential of extending these to 2 year terms to allow for improved continuity. Executive committee members –8 total –3 year terms, staggered Board Liaison:Kathy McCarthy

4 ANST Membership +35% gross gain to ANST in 2004 ANST represents 5.1% of ANS membership Of new ANS members, 12% chose ANST

5 Budget and Planning Budget Information –Total income in 2004: $721 –Current 2005 income (01/01 – 03/31/2005): $1,266 Division Planning/Strategic Plan, Succession Planning –Strategic plan submitted in 2000 –Currently developing 2005/2006 plan

6 Division/TG Governance Communications –ANST business carried out via email discussion list in addition to face-to-face Excom meetings –Website currently in transition New webmaster being identified Site being moved from employer based server to ANS server Newsletter in progress – should be out soon!

7 Division/TG Contributions to ANS ANS Position Statements –# 40: Space Nuclear Technology, 2000 Participation with Other Professional Societies –None officially to date –Plan to seek potential collaborations with AIAA Nuclear and Future Flight Propulsion Committee Society Leadership –Excom members serve on various committees: National Program, Professional Divisions, Student Sections, etc. –Excom member Kathy McCarthy newly elected to at-large position on the Board of Directors Non-Meeting Publications –None to date

8 Division/TG Services to Membership Professional Development –Two sessions at current SNC topical are directed at student / young professional development: The Path from Student to Young Professional in Space Nuclear Technology Roundtable Discussion on Space Nuclear Curricula and Research Scholarships –None currently Peer Recognition/Awards –In discussion Student Support –Provided $200 to support 2005 student conference –Provided paper reviewers for space related papers submitted to 2005 student conference

9 Division/TG Meetings Support of 2-4 sessions per year at national meetings, 2001 - 2004 First embedded topical: Space Nuclear Conference 2005 –39 sessions –130 tech presentations –98 full length papers published –30 invited speakers –226 of 800 pre-registrations selected SNC’05 proceedings (as of 5/20/05) Plan to continue SNC on annual or bi-annual basis, to be discussed at ANST Executive Committee meeting on June 5
