GCAP-GMP Collaboration BM Prasanna GCAP Annual Meeting March 31, 2011 El Batan

GCAP-GMP Projects ● MasAgro: IMIC-LA + TTF ● USDA-SAGARPA Highland Maize ● HarvestPlus (Maize) ● SIMLESA (Objectives 2 + 3) ● CSISA (Maize component) ● BMZ-Bangladesh ● ICAR-QPM ● The Striga Project in Africa (IR maize + Agronomic management) ● USAID-Mozambique

Collaborative Activities in LA ● Evaluation of yield trials under CA for USDA- SAGARPA Highland Maize (1000 rows) and H+ (400 rows) ● Evaluation of advanced hybrids under CA in different TTF hubs under MasAgro. ● In 2011 under MasAgro, 2.5 ha planted under isolations for seed production of elite hybrids under CA, a collaboration between IMIC and TTF. ● Replenishing soil health at Tlalti Experimental Station

Linkages between IMIC-LA and TTF under MasAgro

Rehabilitating Tlalti Field Station ● As a result of historical land management (and perhaps bad soils) the available good land at Tlatizapan is becoming increasing limited. ● Leaving the field bare and erosion over many years has resulted in areas of low and high fertility ● Station committee provided a formal structure for interaction with GCAP on improving Tlati. Bram, Pat and Ken offered a great deal of advice and on-site visits to recommend more sustainable land use and rehabilitation of soils. Clear gradient in biomass of a maize hybrid in one block at Tlalti (NDVI measured 21 DAS)

Improving the precision of drought & low N phenotyping Root phenotyping “shovelomics” J Lynch & S Trachsel Soil measurements conductivity (texture) sampling Characterizing field variability Biomass NVDI visual measurements Yield Tlatizapan Delta-T PR2 Probe Ikenne Sentek Diviner 2000 Monitoring soil moisture ● Good informal collaboration between Mexico based-GCAP group and GMP (particularly Bram, Nele and Ivan) on use and maintenance of NDVI, field variability, shovelomics….

Scaling-up breeding for NUE Increasing the capacity of the ARC, KARI, and CIMMYT to select elite maize hybrids and OPVs under low-N conditions Applying DNA marker-assisted recurrent selection (MARS) Mobilizing single high impact genes. Fertilizer management designed for high-NUE varieties Fertilizer rates and timings optimized for IMAS hybrids and OPVs Improved Maize for African Soils (IMAS)

Achieving sustainable Striga control in Africa ● IITA is the lead center ● Developing IR-maize and evaluating Striga-resistant varieties in Kenya (Dan) ● Testing and deployment of IR- maize technology and integrated Striga control options in Kenya (Fred) ● The Striga project will test elite germplasm in multilocation trials and recommend suitable crop management options to DTMA.

Collaboration through CSISA  Develop high-yielding, heat-tolerant, & disease- resistant maize inbred lines and hybrids for current and future cereal & mixed crop-livestock systems  Experiments on maize under different management options undertaken through CSISA for identifying the best-bet maize varieties under rainfed conditions (ML Jat) – Significant G x M effects  Need for suitable production technology for early maize and full season maize

GCAP scientists are open to collaboration and happy to assist – how can we further strengthen the quality of our interactions ● Better understanding of ongoing work/projects within each program (e.g. low N) ● Regular feedback on performance of genetic materials under CA practices, especially on large plot evaluations ● Validation of elite hybrids/varieties under CA in different regional hubs ● Evaluation of different agronomic practices for seed production ● Effect of planting date, plant density and genotype on maize yield, especially with new genetic materials coming out of breeding pipeline. ● On-farm trials in collaboration with national partners

Opportunities for strengthening GCAP- GMP collaboration ● MAIZE CRP ● CSISA – Phase II ● Great scope for seeking joint funding to build on the success of DTMA and IMAS, looking at management options for drought & low N, especially in SSA ● Mobilizing resources in a coordinated manner (e.g., SIMLEZa) ● Enhancing the impact of CIMMYT’s work in Eastern Asia (China) and SE Asia (Indonesia, Vietnam & Philippines)
