1 Osmosis Foldable The Effect of Osmosis in Cells Select 3 colors for the following terms: Hypertonic Isotonic Hypotonic

2 1 st Column Definition: A condition in which the environment has a higher solute concentration than inside the plant or animal cell. Osmotic pressure causes water to flow out of the cells and causes the cell to shrink. NOTE: Causes wilting in plants. Plasmolysis occurs in both plant and animal cells. THIRSTY! Hyper = Smaller Color the blood cell (red.) Label and color the plant cell nucleus (black), vacuole (blue) and cell wall (green.)

3 2 nd Column Definition: A solution of equal solute concentration that has no net flow of water across a selectively permeable membrane. Note: Iso=Equal Color the blood cell (red.) Label and color the plant cell nucleus (black), vacuole (blue) and cell wall (green.)

4 3 rd Column Definition: A condition in which the inside of the plant or animal cell has a higher solute concentration than its environment. Osmosis causes a net flow of water into the cell, causing swelling and expansion. This swelling may cause cells without a rigid cell wall to burst. Note: In plants, there is an increase in turgor pressure = osmotic pressure. Hypo=Hippo! Color the blood cell (red.) Label and color the plant cell nucleus (black), vacuole (blue) and cell wall (green.)
