3 30 Marker- Exam Questions To be able to describe the requirements of the examination 30 marker. To be able to apply source analysis skills to answer a 30 mark question.

4 You will be asked to compare 2 sources. Make sure that you are looking at the correct sources. Underline the focus of the question. This is the part of the question that says ‘…as evidence for…’ You must stay focused on this part of the question. The questions focus is USEFULNESS-you must consider this in terms of content and provenance. How do you answer a 30 mark question at AS ? 30 marks =30 minutes Part a) questions are always comparisons. The aim is to identify similarities and differences in the sources and to explain these with reference to the nature of the sources. Overall you must provide a judgement as to which you find more useful as a source of information on the given topic. They are worth 30 marks so take 30 minutes to answer.

5 Mark Scheme: What is expected from you? How do you answer a 30 mark question at AS ? Consistent and developed comparison of the key issue with a balanced and well-supported judgement. There may be a little unevenness. Focused use of a range of relevant historical concepts and context to address the key issue The answer is clearly structured and organised. Communicates effectively AO1a A01b AO2a Focused and comparative analysis Controlled and discriminating evaluation of content and provenance, whether integrated or treated separately. Evaluates using a range of relevant provenance points in relation to the sources and question. There is a thorough but not necessarily exhaustive explanation of these.

6 How do you answer a 30 mark question at AS ? So, how do you do it? Plan Read the question what is the question asking you to consider the sources as evidence for? Read and annotate source B and D Remember to consider these questions to help you to evaluate the source as evidence: Who wrote it? Who did they write it/say it to? What did they include? What did they omit? When was it written? Why was it written? How was it written? CONTEXT – a new addition REMEMBER TO LOOK AT THE CONTENT AND THE PROVENANCE. REMEMBER YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE COMPARING THE SOURCES. Make a judgement of utility Consider the following: Do you find one more useful than the other as evidence for the thing stated in the question? Do you feel one is more reliable than the other? Are they both useful but for different purposes? Are the sources complete? Do they omit anything that makes them less useful?

Does this make us question it’s reliability and therefore usefulness? 4 Judgment Utility Do you find one more useful than the other as evidence for the thing stated in the question? Do you feel one is more reliable than the other? Are they both useful but for different purposes? Are the sources complete? Do they omit anything that makes them less useful? Remember a source may have a very useful content and tell you a lot about the given topic BUT if it is unreliable then this undermines the source and makes it less useful.

8 Compare sources B and D as evidence for the reasons why Hitler was appointed as Chancellor. Source D: A modern historian argues that important groups were willing to see Hitler in government. ‘Access to Hindenburg was the key to power. Accordingly, the presidential palace became the focal point of intrigues by politicians who conspired to further their own ambitions. Behind these people stood the important elite groups which were anxious to secure a political solution of the crisis that was favourable to their interests. Few had Hitler as their first choice. By January1933, with other options exhausted, most led by the big landowners, were prepared to give Hitler a chance. Hitler needed the elites to obtain power. However, by January 1933, they, in turn, needed Hitler, as he alone could deliver the mas support required to impose a workable solution to Germany’s crisis.’ Ian Kershaw, ‘Hitler’, 1991 Source B: A high ranking member of President Hindenburg’s office, giving evidence during the Nuremburg trials in 1945- 6, explains the decision to appoint Hitler as chancellor. ‘Despite Papen’s persuasions, until the end of January, Hindenburg was extremely hesitant about making Hitler Chancellor. He wanted to have Papen again as Chancellor. Papen finally won him over to Hitler with the argument that Hitler’s freedom of action would be restricted by the other right wing parties which would be part of the new government. In addition, Papen expressed his fears that, if the present opportunity were missed, a revolt of the National Socialists and a civil war were likely’ Otto Meissner, 1946 Task: Plan your answer to the above question.
