5   Time: Early 1800s  Place: North American Continent, specifically-the West  Competitors: Spain, Great Britain, Russia & United States Setting the Stage

6   Great Britain controlled Canada  Russia claimed Alaska and down the west coast of N. America  Spain claimed the Southwest (became Mexico’s territory after the revolution in 1821)  United States purchased “Louisiana Territory” from France Competition in the West

7   1803  U.S. purchased large amount of land from France for the sum of $15 million  Doubled the size of the United States and brought Americans “out West” The Louisiana Purchase

8   North Western part of North America  Controlled jointly by the United States & Great Britain  Both tried to get the most amount of settlers in that area so they would have the best claim to the land The Oregon Country

9  Lewis & Clark  Before Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase he sent Meriwether Lewis & William Clark to explore the land  Expedition lasted from 1804-1806  They reported the plant & animal life in the region as well as information about natives & chances of settlement  Since they told tale of streams full of beaver, trappers headed west to take part in the fur trade
