Function Project By: Kaley Rogers 6 th Period 8-6

My Real World Problem Grace wants to take dance classes. The studio offers a variety of choices. She can take Pointe, lyrical, tap, jazz, or hip hop. Each class is one hour in length. Grace is deciding how many hours each week she can take according to how much her tuition will be. Tuition for each hour of class at the studio is $33.00.

Equation The equation to my problem is: f(x) = 33x X = The number of hours of dance instruction per week. Y = The total cost of dance tuition per month.

Independent and Dependent Variables The independent variable is my x which is the number of hours of dance instruction per week. The dependent variable is my y which is the total cost of dance tuition per month. We know that y Depends on x. So the monthly cost Depends on how many hours of dance she takes.

Is it a Function?? A function is where there is one independent value paired with exactly one dependent value. This means that the x values CAN NOT repeat. This IS a Function because my X values do not repeat.

Table of Values X33xY(x, y) 133(1)33(1, 33) 233(2)66(2, 66) 333(3)99(3, 99) 433(4)132(4, 132) 533(5)165(5, 165)

Domain and Range Domain- The domain of a function is the set of all possible input values (usually x) which allows the function formula to work. Range- The range is the set of all possible output values (usually y) which results from using the function formula. www.freemathhelp.com D: { 1,2,3,4,5 } R: { 33,66,99,132,165 }

Dance Tuition Graph www.nces.ed.gov

Is the domain continuous or discrete?? Since my data contains only points and NOT a line, then it is a discrete graph. It is discrete because all classes are I hour. There are NO 1 ½ hours or 30 minute classes. There is a maximum of 5 classes that Grace could choose.

Now What?? Grace now just has to decide how much money and how much time she has for dance. If she just wants to take 1 hour of dance, it can be as low as $33.00 a month. If she wants to experience all different kinds of dance, it could cost as much as $165.00 a month. Maybe it’s time for her to crack open her piggy bank!!
