2. Who came? Great(9x) grandparents John Alden and wife Priscilla Mullins came on the Mayflower. John Alden born in England in 1599, boarded Mayflower at about 21 years old Met Priscilla Mullins on the Mayflower Captain Miles Standish wanted to marry Priscilla but was too shy to ask her. He had John talk to Priscilla for him. Priscilla preferred John and told him “Why don’t you speak for yourself, John.” This is documented in the poem The Courtship of Miles Standish that was published in 1858 by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

3. Why did they come? Came mostly for religious reasons. John had been hired to repair the Mayflower because he was a ship carpenter. Decided to journey in hopes of being prosperous in the New World. Old Immigrants

4. Where did they leave? Settle? Left England, stopped in Holland, came to N. America Arrived in Plymouth Massachusetts in 1620. Ellis Island not built yet Pilgrims who founded the Plymouth Colony. B/c of this, never lived in a tenement John and Priscilla married on May 12, 1622 & later had ten children. Years later they moved to a near-by town called Duxbury. The Alden Family house still stands there today as a historic site!

5. When did they come to PA? 4x great-grandparents Abiezer Field Jr. and Hannah Wilber (John and Pricilla’s 4x great- grandchildren) came to northern part of PA near Bradford County in the Armenia Mountains Not sure why, best guess was to buy more land since research shows that’s why many came to PA at that time. B/c farmers, no Ethnic Neighborhoods, never worked for Andrew Carnegie, no union membership until very recently
