1 S2 Chemistry Materials from the Earth
Global warming S2 Chemistry Materials from the Earth

2 It’s caused by carbon dioxide, which is a very dangerous gas.
It’s to do with the Earth heating up and if we don’t do something about it we’re all going to die. Humans are causing it. It’s caused by carbon dioxide, which is a very dangerous gas. What is global warming? Global warming is the same thing as the greenhouse effect. They are bad for the planet.

3 Learning outcomes Success criteria
Understand the difference between “global warming” and “the greenhouse effect”. You can write definitions for “global warming” and “the greenhouse effect”. You can draw a diagram which shows how the greenhouse effect works. You can list the three main greenhouse gases in order of their importance. You can explain whether the greenhouse effect is a good or bad thing.

5 Fact Theory or Lie? Before we can call something a fact, we need robust evidence. Evidence usually needs to come from a number of different sources. It is the job of scientists to gather evidence, interpret it and present their findings to the public. Until it is proved a fact, everything is a theory.

6 Water boils at 100C

7 Plants produce oxygen

8 Oxygen is the most common gas in the air

9 The universe started with a Big Bang

10 The greenhouse effect is a bad thing

11 The sun takes 365 days to go around the earth

12 The earth is a sphere

13 The Earth is getting hotter

14 Carbon dioxide is causing the Earth to get hotter

15 Burning fossil fuels like petrol produces carbon dioxide

16 Humans are causing global warming

17 Global warming will stop if humans stop producing so much carbon dioxide

18 Global Warming and The Greenhouse Effect

19 Definitions “Global warming”:
the increase in the average temperature of the Earth. Although related, is NOT the same thing as the “Greenhouse Effect” “The Greenhouse Effect”: is ability of the planet to trap heat, caused by greenhouse gases absorbing heat energy from the sun.

20 The Greenhouse Effect

21 Most of the heat lost back into space
Greenhouse gases trap some of the heat on Earth Heat travels from the sun to the Earth

22 Facts It is totally natural
It is vitally important – it keeps the Earth C warmer than it would be otherwise Without it life on Earth would not exist

23 The media confuse the Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming and often use the terms interchangeably.
Often they refer only to “Global Warming” when actually they mean the Greenhouse Effect.

26 Greenhouse Gases We need them!

27 Greenhouse Gases The most important greenhouse gases (in order) are:
Water vapour (60%) Carbon dioxide (15%) Methane Nitrous oxide Ozone Draw a pie chart to show this information, divided into: “water vapour”, “carbon dioxide” and “other gases”.

28 Role of Greenhouse Gases in Heat Absorption
Other gases Water vapour Water vapour Carbon dioxide Carbon dioxide

29 In summary… Greenhouse Effect – good! Global Warming – bad!
