2 Mediterranean Pirates from the Barbary Coast demanded tribute from European and American traders.

3 Victory at Sea Jefferson attacked Tripoli and refused to pay any more tributes. Admiral Stephen Decatur was the hero.

4 Embargo Act (1807) Frustrated by British impressment and harassment at sea of Americans, the US prohibited trade with all foreign nations. However, this hurt American merchants.

5 The Battle of Tippecanoe Shawnee chief Tecumseh didn’t think that Indians should sell their land to the whites. William Harrison provoked an attack and destroyed Tecumseh’s Indian Confederation.

6 Slaughter!

7 Peace vs. War? Hawk The Federalists wanted to avoid war with Britain, but President James Madison believed that a state of war already existed.
