17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 1 Progress in ITER Diagnostics Michael Walsh and the ITER Diagnostics Team (IO Diagnostics, all DAs and supporters, associated groups) 24/09/2012 The views and opinions expressed herein do not necessarily reflect those of the ITER Organization

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 2 Overview Our purpose Up on site Where are we going? Where are we now? Integration What next?

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 3 Physics: ITER is designed to produce a plasma dominated by  -particle heating produce a significant fusion power amplification factor (Q ≥ 10) in long-pulse operation aim to achieve steady-state operation of a tokamak (Q = 5) retain the possibility of exploring ‘controlled ignition’ (Q ≥ 30) Technology: demonstrate integrated operation of technologies for a fusion power plant test components required for a fusion power plant test concepts for a tritium breeding module ITER Scope - Mission Goals

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 5 How to go forward Achieving the ITER mission is a challenge and we are tasked with this And this will only be done with your skills, expertise, collaboration and tenacity – but we must be coordinated Recently voted no 2 in “The 10 World Changing Experiments that will shape the future and affect every single person including you”- BBC Focus

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 13 Current plan for diagnostics Plan is to complete majority of CDRs this year First deliveries in diagnostics in 2 years Majority of systems on ITER in approximately 8-9 years Design review status of systems…………………

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 15 Coordination Development of new planning for ITER based on more collaborative approach New terms are : Worked very closely with all ITER (IO and DAs) Now reasonable basis plan Now will need to make it happen Total must be greater than the sum of the parts OPS SMP DWS

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 16 Integration

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 17 Zones of integration (infrastructure)

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 18 ITPA SWG identified 6 main areas: Material choice for erosion and deposition dominated conditions Predictive modeling of plasma/neutral environment and Irradiation effects on mirror optical properties Mitigation of deposition – Beryllium (and Carbon) Cleaning of deposited layers Beryllium (and/or Carbon) Laser/Plasma Sputtering Mirror tests under neutron, gamma, and x-ray environment Engineering and Manufacturing of ITER first mirrors and supporting mirror surface recovery systems First Mirrors Major Areas to be Tackled

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 19 Reflections: Look at Upper Vis/IR System

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 20 No reflections Realistic reflections with Be, W and CFC divertor Realistic reflections with Be and W divertor – note significant influence of angular dependence of W emissivity, which is not corrected here Reflection simulation examples for ITER Infrared diagnostics The maximum temperature is estimated relatively correctly, especially if angular dependence of emissivity is accounted for, but in cooler areas large deviations are observed due to reflections. Knowledge of optical properties of observed target is important. [M.H. Aumeunier et al., SOFE 2011]

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 21 Spectroscopy Many CDRs completed here (x-ray, VUV, Balmer-alpha) Active Spectroscopy coming up next month (RF CXRS) KO-VUV first Prototype results last week For visible systems – shiny vessel so need to be careful of divertor light – modelling here ADAS involved in modelling at different stages Good to see an overall modelling strategy that meshes Need to work together to provide well verified models

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 22 Summary Procurement contracts for many systems are now officially in place All DAs now have at least one PA project (Annex B) Many of the projects are really underway Timely delivery of the ITER mission is very important (including diagnostics!) We need to continue to work together

17 th ADAS Workshop, Cadarache, France 2012 Page 23 Thank you for listening
