2. War dialing(a.k.a. Demon Dialing) was designed by hackers and is used to find other computers through telephone lines. The program dials 10,000 numbers in a row and then "listens" for a a computer or fax tone.

3. People did this to sell the numbers to junk-fax companies for money, and then they would send "junk mail" without permission.

4. Other war dialers just use it for harrassment. They would call the same number over and over and over again whether it was 3am or 12pm. Sometimes companies use war dialers to find other computers within their company.

5. Dialing phone numbers and hanging up is not illegal, nor is dialing thousands of numbers. But repeated calls to one person or company is called harrassment or stalking, which is illegal. Selling fax numbers to junk-fax companies became illegal back in the 1980's and still is today

6. You could get “war dialed” and get called continuously at all hours of the day. This can become extremely annoying. So be AWARE of those demon dialers!
