NIGHT Pages 66-84

Night Journal 4  Write candidly for 5 minutes regarding the following prompt(s). Be honest with your thoughts. What does it mean? How do the words affect you? “‘I have more faith in Hitler than in anyone else. He alone has kept his promises, all his promises, to the Jewish people’” (81).

Kaddish – The Mourner’s Prayer “We promised: in three days, when we would see the smoke rising from the chimney, we would think of him. We would gather ten men and hold a special service. All his friends would say Kaddish” (77).

Kaddish – The Mourner’s Prayer  The Kaddish is a prayer that praises God and expresses a yearning for the establishment of God's kingdom on earth.  It is recited at funerals and by mourners, and sons are required to say Kaddish for eleven months after the death of a parent.  The first mention of mourners saying Kaddish at the end of the service is in a thirteenth century halakhic writing (Jewish law).

Kaddish – The Mourner’s Prayer May His great Name grow exalted and sanctified (Amen.) in the world that He created as He willed. May He give reign to His kingship in your lifetimes and in your days, and in the lifetimes of the entire Family of Israel, swiftly and soon. Now respond: Amen. (Congregation: Amen. May His great Name be blessed forever and ever.) May His great Name be blessed forever and ever. Blessed, praised, glorified, exalted, extolled, mighty, upraised, and lauded be the Name of the Holy One, Blessed is He (Congregation: Blessed is He) beyond any blessing and song, praise and consolation that are uttered in the world. Now respond: Amen. May there be abundant peace from Heaven, and life upon us and upon all Israel. Now respond: Amen. He Who makes peace in His heights, may He make peace, upon us and upon all Israel. Now respond: Amen. http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/kaddish.html

Allen Ginsberg  1926-1997  Jewish-American Poet  Leader of the Beat Movement in the 1950s and 1960s  Continued to write and influence poets and poetry throughout his life  Known as one of the greatest American poets  Howl (2010 movie) was based on the trial surrounding his poem of the same name  He is played by James Franco, it’s quite good No, we won’t watch it as a class

Allen Ginsberg’s “Kaddish”  “Kaddish” is based on the traditional Hebrew prayer for the dead and tells the life story of Ginsberg's mother, Naomi.  The poet's complex feelings for his mother, colored by her struggle with mental illness, are at the heart of this long- lined poem.  Follow along while we listen to Ginsberg read from the poem.  We only have parts of the poem here, it is much longer when complete.  Listen/watch for lines that compare and contrast with the use of the Kaddish in Night and the traditional Jewish prayer

Mourning the Dead  How can we compare and contrast the Kaddish with Allen Ginsberg’s poem?  What lines of importance can you find in each piece that you can relate to Wiesel’s Night?  What themes do the three works share?

Illustrating Night  With a partner, choose a single moment from our reading section for today.  Illustrate that scene or moment portraying the mood and tone of the piece selected.  Include a quote from this moment on your poster  Be sure to make use of colors, light, and dark  On the back of your sheet (or separate sheet) write a 1 paragraph explanation of the scene  Include why you chose it and why your image portrays the mood and tone of that moment in the book  We will present these at the end of class.
