2 Beginning of WWII-1939  Major cause was the Treaty of Versailles which blamed Germany for WWI

3 September 1, 1939  Was an invasion of Poland by Germany, the Soviet Union and a small Slovak contingent that marked the beginning of World War II in Europe.  The invasion began on 1 September 1939

4 GLOBAL SUPERPOWERS ( Beginning of War)  AXIS POWERS  Germany  Italy  Japan  Russia (then moved to Allies)  ALLIES  United States  Great Britain  France

5 Pearl Harbor (December 7,1941)  Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

6 Internment (January 13, 1942)  Japanese Americans were sent to internment camps

7 Battle of Midway ( June 4-7, 1942)  Effectively destroyed Japan’s naval strength when the Americans destroyed four of its aircraft carriers.  Was the turning point of the war

8 Battle of Stalingrad (August 1942)  One of bloodiest battles ever, it was the German army's greatest defeat.

9 May 13, 1943  Germans give up North Africa

10 D-Day (June 6, 1944)  Allied invasion of Normandy, France

11 Battle of the Bulge (Dec. 1944)  Thirty German divisions were secretly massed in the Ardennes Forest and then thrown against a weakened American line on December 16, 1944. The Americans were completely taken by surprise, and the Germans made excellent headway.

12 Battle of Okinawa (April 1945)  After a long campaign of island hopping, the Allies were approaching Japan, and planned to use Okinawa, a large island only 340 mi (550 km) away from mainland Japan, as a base for air operations on the planned invasion of Japanese mainland.

13 Ending of war ( August 6, 1945)  United states dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and a few days later at Nagasaki!

14 WWII Ends ( August 14, 1945)  Japan surrenders  The war ends after many years of fighting
