Get Your Mind in Order 1 Peter 4:1-6

Get Your Mind in Order 1 Peter 4:1-6

What Have We Seen Thus Far? Chapter 1- they were special & chosen Chapter 2- they had “attached” themselves to Christ so they needed to keep their behavior “excellent”, I.e. above average Chapter 3-instruction about the enemy they COULD deal with Chapter 4- sooo, Get Your Mind in Order and here are three reasons to do so…

Because of Your Commitment Christ has “suffered death” in the flesh He’s our example and he has ceased from sin Has the Christian “suffered death” in the flesh?

Romans 6:5-7 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,6. knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;7. for he who has died is freed from sin. Body of sin was done away… in baptism

Romans 6:11-13 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.12. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts,13. and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. One chooses to cease from sin. It is a contin- ual process

The act of submitting to baptism becomes a promise/vow, it is a covenant relationship

Because of Your Past Sensuality- filthy words, indecent bodily movements and unchaste handling of males and females, etc. Lusts- desire for what is forbidden Drunkenness- excess of wine Carousals- drinking parties, protracted till late, with revelry Drinking parties/banquetings- ??? Is Peter being redundant? Perhaps we should check synonyms!

R.C.Trench, Synonyms of the N.T. Drinking parties, banquetings Greek- potos a drinking bout not necessarily in excess Drinking in ALL it’s forms are said to be a thing of the past for Christians, I.e. 1.Drunkenness 2.Carousals, I.e. partying with drinking 3.Drinking parties, I.e. drinking, Not in excess

Because of Your Past Sensuality- filthy words, indecent bodily movements and unchaste handling of males and females, etc. Lusts- desire for what is forbidden Drunkenness- excess of wine Carousals- drinking parties Drinking parties/banquetings- Drinking, but NOT necessarily in excess Idolatries- which promoted all above!

All three types of drinking as well as unclean thoughts and suggestive actions belong to your past, in the world. To various degrees, these continue to be the concern of the world today. Get your mind in order.

Because it will be Difficult Can sin in any of a hundred ways and people will accept that. When you become a Christian they will be surprised Going with Christ may mean leaving associations.

Acts 17:30-31 "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,31. because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead." They WILL give an account

John 5:28-29 "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,29. and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. They WILL give an account

Romans 14:12 So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God. They WILL give an account

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. They WILL give an account

The Gospel Has A Purpose It is preached to the dead, to bring life to their spirits and the hope of eternity. But it only works with those who “arm” themselves… Only with those who get their minds in order Does it have a purpose for you?
