Vocabulary Baseball for “Casey at the Bat”
Each group A-E will receive a word list. Define the words on your list. Practice pronouncing the words on your list. Words groups are on page 293. The total word bank is on page 294. I also put them on the last 2 slides. EXTENSION IDEA: HAVE STUDENTS PROVIDE A SYNONYM.

Jigsaw a New Group In your groups, teach one another the pronunciations and definitions of your words.

How to Play Divide into 2 teams. Set up bases. Place all words on slips into 2 different containers. All students receive a list of the words. Checkmark the words you miss or don’t know as the game proceeds. I can see small groups playing this against each other on a “baseball” field drawn on a piece of paper and tokens for batters. This would reduce the wait time between batters and increase student participation.

Rules of the Game Choose a captain, a pitcher, and a scorekeeper for you team. The teacher is the umpire. Name your team. Team members must define words as they are “pitched” or called out by the pitcher. Each correct answer will move a player forward one base. Words defined incorrectly are “outs.”

Rules continued If bases are loaded, the next player may try for a home run. The player must announce that he or she is trying for a home run before the word is pitched. The game is over when all the words have been “pitched.”
