2 Why Physical Activity Important for You… Since… Modern conveniences have promoted a sedentary lifestyle Physical inactivity is as unhealthy as smoking Therefore… You need to be active to be healthy or stay healthy Dictionary: Sedentary - a medical term used to denote a type of lifestyle with no or irregular physical activity. A couch potato.

3 Where to Start Scientists say that 60 minutes of light physical activity a day is required to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The time depends on the type of activity

5 There are 3 Activity Groups 1. Endurance Activities These activities help out your heart, lungs, and circulatory system. Here are some examples: Walking Golfing Yard Work Cycling Skating Swimming Dancing

6 2. Flexibility Activities These activities help you move easily, keep your muscles relaxed, and your joints mobile. These activities will help make sure you have a better quality of life when you get older. Here are some examples: Stretching exercises Yoga T’ai Chi Golf Curling Dance Vacuuming

7 Strength Activities These activities help your muscles and bones stay strong, improve your posture, and fight osteoporosis Here are some examples: Heavy yard work (cutting/piling wood) Lifting and carrying groceries Climbing stairs Lifting weights Push ups/ Sit ups/ Pull ups Dictionary: Osteoporosis - a disease of bones that leads to an increased risk of fracture or breakage.
