5 The 9 Main Components of the Communication Process

6 1. Context “Provides the people, occasion and task” Ex. Which type of language you use depends on the people involved. Standard language, informal language, or technical language. (Chapter 1 review)

7 2. Physical Environment “Actual place/space where communication occurs”

8 3. Climate “Your mood and emotions” wedding vs. funeral

9 4. Communicator Sender – sends communication Receiver – receives communication

10 5. Message: “Information exchanged between communicators”

11 6. Channel “way the message is transmitted”

12 THINK, PAIR, SHARE What are some examples of a channel in communication? List as many as you can with your partner, be ready to share

14 What is the difference when communicating with phone vs text?

15 7. Noise “interferes with a message, usually temporary” Internal: Thoughts or feelings that interfere with the communicator (daydreaming, sleepy, cold, ill, etc.) External: distraction in the channel/physical environment (smells, sights, sounds, constant talking, etc.)

16 8. Barrier Any obstacle that blocks communication Internal – within the communicator (prejudices, bias, etc.) External – exists everywhere else (different language, non- verbal’s are different, distance)

18 Think, Pair, Share: Talk with your partner and list one noise and one barrier that you just saw in the video clip. It can be either internal or external.
