2 What is a Volcano? A volcano is a mountain where lava erupts through the surface of the planet.

3 Did you know? The name "volcano" has its origin from the name of Vulcan, A god of fire.

4 What are Lava and Magma ? Magma is hot liquid rock inside a volcano. Lava is hot liquid rock (magma) that erupts out of a volcano. Fresh lava ranges from 700° to 1,200° C in temperature.

5 How many volcanoes are there in the world? There are around 1,500 volcanoes in the world. There are 80 or more volcanoes which are under the ocean.

6 What are the three layers the Earth is made of? Crust The crust is the outer layer of the Earth,part we live on. It is about 18 miles thick. Mantle The second layer of the Earth is called the mantle. It is about 1,800 miles thick. Core The inner layer is called the core.

7 What is the Ring of Fire? About half of the world’s volcanoes are around the Pacific Ocean called the Ring of Fire.

8 Did you know? The world's largest, active volcano is Mauna Loa. Mauna Loa is found in Hawaii in the U.S. Mauna Loa is 4,170 m above sea level and it is taller than Mount Everest.

9 Types of Volcanoes There are 3 different types of volcanoes: Active - eruptions can be anytime and often. Dormant - has been a while since it has erupted, but could at anytime. Extinct, meaning it hasn't erupted in a very long time so it probably won't ever again.
