Reconstruction of Xueshan Village,Sichuan Province, P. R. China Zhe Peng, Hong Kong

In 2008, a great earthquake with a magnitude of 7 stroke the center of the Sichuan Province. All the buildings and infrastructures in Xueshan Village were seriously damaged or destroyed. There are 107 families living without permanent shelters and 14 families whose houses need to be repaired.

3 The locals not only suffered a lot from the horrible economic and psychological damages, but also their normal lives are still greatly influenced by the post-earthquake effects. In such circumstances, one of the most urgent tasks is to improve the people’s living environment and reconstruct their homeland.

Admittedly, the inrush of the capital flow and increase of the GDP form the boom of urban development. However, the lots of traditional architecture have been tore down replacing by massive non-identity architectural duplications which is deeply rooted in industrialism. The globalization, to some extent, relentlessly suppress the cultural territoriality and nationality resulting the similar urban appearances in geographically and climatically different areas.

The industrialization indeed bring convenience towards people. However, the sacrifice of the traditional development mode, which ignore the cultural and environmental sustainability, has caused greater problems than the benefits it brought to. As Fry and Drew put it in the TROPICAL ARCHITECTURE that,” Modern architecture, and its extension into town planning, has above all this task of interpreting applied science in humanistic terms”

We try to make an integrated planning system to improve the living quality whilst reserving the natural scenery and local custom to the greatest extent. Noticing that this small village is located near the panda's habitat and full of bamboo resources, we came up with a project named Panda Friendly with a hope to develop the local cultural tourism industry. We use bamboo as the main construction material for its excellent physical properties. Moreover, to make it form a sustainable recycling, we are going to plant them around the village and arrange them for seperate use-as building material supply and food for panda respectively. System of reconstruction

The trail of Panda is extended from the Preservation Area into the Village. Reconstructed and preserved the historic buildings in the village, such as the Old Temple and other old vernacular dwellings, we invited tourists to adventure in the stories of Panda and the local culture by deliberately arranging the route and the buildings that lies on the route. The trail started from the visitor center, passing through a series of historic buildings, craft shops and the panda museum, and leads you to the panda watching area in the bamboo grove.
