3 Fermilab Bob Webber - HINS R&D Status - August 2006 AAC 3 Today’s Message HINS R&D program is still alive Progress continues to be made –325 MHz klystron has been commissioned –First room temperature spoke cavity will be tested with RF power this month –First superconducting spoke cavity is fabricated and being prepared for vertical cryostat test Current status is generally 9-12 months behind schedule presented to the AAC 15 months ago in May 2006 Current level of manpower resources and anticipated ~$2M M&S budget in FY08 will lead to further delays

4 Fermilab Bob Webber - HINS R&D Status - August 2006 AAC 4 HINS Motivation and Mission Motivation – –To demonstrate key and un-tested technologies important to the low-energy front-end section of the proposed 8 GeV H- Linac Mission, unchanged from ~2 years ago – –To accomplish the R&D necessary to establish technical credibility and cost basis for the Linac front-end by ~2010

5 Fermilab Bob Webber - HINS R&D Status - August 2006 AAC 5 HINS R&D Objectives Demonstrate high power RF distribution and 4.5 msec pulse operation of multiple cavities from a single klystron Demonstrate performance of 325 MHz high power vector (IQM) modulators for amplitude and phase control of multiple cavities Measure axially-symmetric beam performance with room- temperature crossbar spoke resonator cavities and SC solenoid focusing in the RT Linac Demonstrate beam acceleration at energies above 10 MeV using superconducting spoke resonator RF structures Demonstrate high-speed (nanosecond) beam chopping at 2.5 MeV Demonstrate performance of this Linac design concept and the resulting beam quality to 60 MeV This all adds up to building a one-of-a-kind superconducting 60 MeV H- linac

20 Fermilab Bob Webber - HINS R&D Status - August 2006 AAC 20 Ion Source, RFQ and Beyond Proton source has been operational in MS6 and currently is undergoing modifications to improve high voltage power system and voltage stand- off capability MEBT chopper pulser prototyping is underway MEBT buncher cavity design is complete and fabrication bids are coming in RFQ delivery is now expected ~October 2007 RT cavities #2-4 are being machined RT SC solenoid+trim magnet design and prototyping is complete; ready for procurement

21 Fermilab Bob Webber - HINS R&D Status - August 2006 AAC 21 Superconducting Spoke Cavities First SC spoke cavity fabrication has been received from Zanon Second cavity is currently in fabrication at Roark

22 Fermilab Bob Webber - HINS R&D Status - August 2006 AAC 22 Superconducting Spoke Cavities Test cryostat for full pulsed power testing –High fabrication bids prompted new direction in design –Engineers were re-directed to fix LHC magnet failure –Drawings for cryostat vacuum vessel are now complete Plans are proceeding for full voltage CW test of first spoke cavity in the recently commissioned ILC Vertical Test Stand –Mechanical components are designed and mostly on hand –1.3 GHz  325 MHz frequency converters are designed and being assembled to take full advantage of the existing VTS control and data acquisition systems –200 watt CW 325 MHz amplifier has been spec’d and requisitioned Cavity will be BCP’ed at Argonne ~ 2 weeks prior to test anticipated in October

23 Fermilab Bob Webber - HINS R&D Status - August 2006 AAC 23 Meson Schedule 2006 (from 5/2006 updated 8/2007 and assuming present resources) Short “mock” Linac cave section available –May 2006 available, but nothing yet installed (no people) Klystron modulator completion –July 2006 first pulsed in February 2, 2007 (AD EE priorities) 325 MHz RF power system commissioning –July 2006 completed April 4, 2007 (modulator delay) 325 MHz component testing in RF test area –Starting August 2006 began in May 2007 (modulator delay) 325 MHz RT cavity power testing –September 2006 began this week, August 2007 (rad safety issue) Superconducting cavity test cryostat installation –October 2006 sometime 2008 ($$$ and engineer reassignment)

25 Fermilab Bob Webber - HINS R&D Status - August 2006 AAC 25 Manpower Resources are Finite and Small HINS is now on third AD mechanical engineering liaison in 18 months and he’s planning to retire around this year’s end Key TD engineers were called to design fixes for LHC triplet magnet problem Cryogenics engineering resources are in high demand from all corners; HINS priority is low Key technical systems now ( still, since May 2006 ) lacking required attention –RF power distribution system (tightly coupled with cavity design status and power requirements) –Low level RF systems – system design, modeling, hardware –Cryogenics delivery system engineering for the Meson Linac cave –Beam instrumentation systems

26 Fermilab Bob Webber - HINS R&D Status - August 2006 AAC 26 Critical FY08 Needs To stop budget erosion –~$5M M&S budget in FY06 (2.8 FNAL, 2.2 collaborating Labs) –~$3M guidance in FY07 reduced to ~$2M –~$2M anticipated for FY08 Cryostat for pulsed SC spoke cavity testing –Cryostat design and procurement Dedicated mechanical and cryo engineering with drafting support (1 FTE eng., 1 FTE drafting) –Cryogenics installation in test cave Dedicated cryo engineering and installation techs (0.25 FTE eng., 0.5 FTE tech) –$350K M&S SC solenoid/cavity/cryostat design and prototyping –Cavity fast tuner design and prototyping Mechanical engineer with controls and tech support (1 FTE eng., 0.5 FTE tech) –Beam line cryostat design Cryo/mechanical engineer and drafting support (0.3 FTE eng., 0.4 FTE tech) –Focusing solenoid design and prototype Magnet designer and drafting support (0.3 FTE eng., 0.4 FTE tech/drafting) RT solenoid helium vessel and lead design and partial procurement (0.25 FTE eng., 0.4 FTE tech/drafting) –$300K M&S

30 Fermilab Bob Webber - HINS R&D Status - August 2006 AAC 30 From May 2006 AAC Report The plan has a number of challenges, requires development of several technologies, and many of the components are at the frontier of R&D in this field. The overall schedule seems to be ambitious but manageable, and the committee supports the plan, with the recommendation that a detailed schedule with milestones and deliverables be developed. In addition, the committee recommends that –sufficient diagnostics be included in the test facility to fully verify success as well as understand unexpected results –detailed simulations be performed to verify the vector modulator specifications and performance
