1 Project 5 SOWK 300 Computer Applications in the Social Sciences Fall 2011 Danielle Mitchell Section 02 Tues. Thurs. Introduction Surveys are a more interesting way of gathering information. The survey used in this research is entitled Skin Color and Hair Survey. The main goal of the survey is to gather information of the attitudes individuals have during this day and age. Many responses were expected while others were a surprising to see. As a source of respondents, students and faculty of Tuskegee University were use. There is not necessarily an issue being researched, however the attitudes of individuals concerning skin tone and hair textures are being studied. Univariate Graphs The answer choices given as it relates to gender were male and female. Among the respondents, 41% were male and 59% were females. As expected more males than females participated in the survey. There were one hundred respondents in total. The other different demographic information recorded was the age of the respondents. There were several different categories used to measure the different age groups. The major individuals 21 to 24 years of age. The next leading groups were to those individuals in the age group of under 21. The next highest were those individuals in the age group of 25 to 40 with 18%. The two lowest percentages belong to those individuals in the age groups 41 to 54 and 55 and over. Due to the data recorded many of the individuals that participated were the students from the University. Additional Information The last question discussed is on that is focused on an individual’s hair. The question asked here was “ Do you think that the kind of hair you have impact how others perceive you?” Majority of the female respondents answered “yes” and 22% males also said “yes”. Many individuals get looked over for job promotions because of their hair. In some instances a simple hair cut can take you a long ways. In professional environment a clean cut is more accepted over dreadlocks. Bivariate Information cont. Social Work 300 Skin Color and Hair Survey References As reported once before many of the respondents of the survey were female individuals. As data reports, 40% of the female respondents believe that hair texture is more important to women. Of the male respondents 52% of those respondents believe that texture is also very important to women. Overall one can conclude that hair texture is more important to females than males. Sex of Respondents The survey was designed to make individuals think and reevaluate their person become more open- minded when it comes to certain things and realize there are things more important than skin tones and hair textures when it comes to people evaluating others.al beliefs. Also hopefully individuals have realized their own biases and will work towards changing them.
