1 Sexual Reproduction SWBAT identify and describe the following flower parts and the function of each; sepals, petals, stamens, and pistils; distinguish between pollination and fertilization in flowers; explain various ways that plants may be pollinated; list several ways in which plants disperse seeds.

2 Quick Review What are traits? What are genes? What are gametes?

3 Sexual Reproduction How does sexual reproduction create genetic variation? Only one chromosome is taken from each parent, so the offspring can look like mom, dad, or a combination of the two Haploid Cells that have only ½ the chromosomes of a regular cell (this is what is found in gametes)

4 Flowers Sepals Leaf-like structures positioned at the outermost base of the flower Protect the flower while it is developing Petals Largest and most colorful part of a flower. They provide the color and design of the flower Help attract insects and animals that aid in pollination

5 Flowers Stamen Male reproductive part of a flower. It’s made up of two parts; long thin filaments and the anther which is filled with pollen grains Produces pollen grains which are the male gametes

6 Flowers Pistil Female reproductive part of a flower. It’s made up of three parts; ovary, style, and stigma, which is the sticky part pollen catches on Collects pollen for reproduction and draws into the ovary to produce seeds

7 Pollination Pollination Ovules Seed
Process of transferring pollen form an anther to a stigma Ovules Contains the eggs of the plant Seed Protects the embryo and stored food

8 Pollination How is pollination different from fertilization?
Pollination is the moving of pollen. Fertilization doesn’t happen until the pollen tube as connected with the ovary and produced a zygote

What is a pollinator? Anything that transfers pollen from the stamen to the stigma List some examples of pollinators. Insects – bees Butterflies and moths Birds and bats Wind

How do pollinators spread the pollen? Unintentionally. When they drink nectar they pick up pollen on their bodies which is then transferred to another plant of the same species, when they land to drink from it. Self-Pollination Pollen from the same plant fertilizes itself Cross-Pollination Pollen from a different plant fertilizes it
