2 Qualitative Research 4 Benefits of QR –Opportunity to consult your target audience –Exploratory and directional in nature –QR on any budget 3 QR projects from $300 to $21,000 4 Limitations –Small sample sizes cannot be projected to larger populations 4 QR formats –Focus groups, Interviews, Surveys

3 Knowledge, Attitudes and Beliefs (KAB’s) of Women with Regard to the ASHC. Background 4 The Arthritis Foundation Self-Help Course has repeatedly been shown to improve arthritis-related outcomes. 4 However, less than 1% of those with arthritis have taken ASHC. Purpose To identify barriers limiting participation, by Utah women with arthritis, in the Arthritis Foundation Self-Help Course (ASHC).

4 KAB’s of Women Continued… Qualitative Format Focus Groups- 32 participants 4 Five-90 minute groups (one pretest group) 4 8 participants 4 Three moderated by a qualitative research expert from the University of Utah 4 Two moderated by the UAP Health Program Specialistas part of training to build capacity with in UAP $8,500

5 Primary Care Providers Background 4 Prior research 4 Women viewed physician recommendations as critically influencing their own decisions Purpose To assess the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of primary care providers regarding patient self-management, particularly local arthritis resources.

6 Primary Care Providers continued... Qualitative Format Focus Groups- 38 participants 4 Five-120 minute groups –Two groups with Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants (18 participants) –Three groups with Primary Care Physicians (Internists, General Practice and Family Practice) (20 participants) 4 Moderated by a market research expert at Focused Solutions $21,000

7 ASHC Volunteer Leaders Background 4 Few ASHC being taught 4 Difficulty recruiting (participants & leaders) 4 Few ASHC Leaders commit to teach regularly (once a year) Purpose To identify Leaders’ KAB’s about the ASHC, as well as the barriers to teaching on a regular basis.

8 ASHC Volunteer Leaders continued... Qualitative Format 4 Phone Interviews - 11 leaders, 15-30 minutes 4 Focus Group- 6 leaders, two hour moderated discussion 4 Mail Survey- 3 leaders, two page $300-400

9 UAP Efforts 4 ASHC –Different formats –Assist leaders 4 Continuum Project –Pilot in Healthy Utah –TOSH 4 UAP Awareness –Health care providers –Women 45+ –Seniors
