2 What is “health”? A state of being that occurs in varying degrees of wellness and illness Determinants of health include the internal and external environments, availability of personal, social, and cultural resources, and lifestyle.

4 Emotional The ability to control stress and to express emotions appropriately and comfortably

5 Physical The ability to carry out daily tasks, develop cardiovascular and muscular fitness, maintain a healthy weight and nutritious diet, and avoid abusing harmful substances

6 Environmental The ability to promote healthy habits that improve the standard and quality of living in the community

7 Occupational The ability to maintain a balance between work and leisure in order to promote wellness and personal satisfaction.

8 Social The ability to interact successfully in a positive manner with people in a personal environment.

9 Spiritual The ability to grow, learn, and meet new challenges while finding meaning and direction in life.

10 Intellectual The ability to use learned information effectively for personal growth and development

11 The Health Continuum

12 Illness: –Low energy level –Aches and pains –Prolonged illness –Negative outlook –Isolation Wellness: -High energy level -Enthusiasm -Sense of purpose -Feeling of well-being -Supportive relationships

13 The Health Continuum Location on the continuum can move each day Someone in the middle is not enjoying the full benefits of health In the past, people were concerned with avoiding illness and death and were satisfied at the midpoint Today, we are able to achieve a higher level of health and a better quality of life

14 Two Evaluating Factors of Health 1.Life Expectancy: -The number of years a person can expect to live (has increased by 30 years between 1900 and 2000) 2.Quality of Life: - The degree of overall satisfaction that one gets from life (must concentrate on more than one aspect of health to have high quality of life)

15 Factors That Influence Health: Heredity Environment Media Technology Healthcare Behavior ACTIVITY: –With partner, identify ways in which each of these factors influence YOUR life. Write answers down and use examples.

16 Risk Factors Risk Factor: –Any action or condition that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other negative outcome What are some risk factors that we have control over in everyday life?

17 Healthy People 2010 National health program with 2 main goals: –Increase amount of years of healthy life for each American –Eliminate differences in health based on race, ethnic group, or income The program aims to raise awareness, provide information for everyone, and help individuals build the skills they need to maintain a healthier life. http://www.healthypeople.gov/
