Mini-MCT prep The arctic is located at the north and south portions of the planet. Organisms living in the arctic face many challenges. One of these challenges in staying warm when temperatures fall well below freezing. Suppose an arctic hare was born with much thicker fur than the rest of the organisms in the population. Would natural selection favor this trait?

What happens to organisms that have bad traits? What happens to organisms that have good traits?

Organisms that are favored by natural selection have something called reproductive success. Reproductive success means having lots of children

An organism that has high reproductive success has lots of offspring (children) High reproductive success

An organism that does not have reproductive success has no offspring (children)

Let's practice... 1)What is the definition of reproductive success? 2) Organism A has high reproductive success and Organism B has low reproductive success. Who has more children?

If an organism has bad traits, it usually won't survive long enough to have children, so it has low reproductive success. Organisms that have good traits have high reproductive success.

Let's practice... 1) 2) If an organism has great traits, will it have high reproductive success or low reproductive success?

2) Organisms living on the African plains face many challenges. Gazelles rely on their speed to escape the ecosystem's many predators. A gazelles is born with a hoof that allows it to run more quickly. a) Would this trait be favored by natural selection? b) Would this organism have high or low reproductive success?

Natural Selection activity You are a predator. You must use a toothpick to eat as many prey as possible in 30 minutes

Rules: Round 1 #4 Will pick toothpicks out of the box one at a time with tweezers #3 Will gently shake the box #2 Will count the number of toothpicks of each color #1 Will record the number of toothpicks on the paper

How many red toothpicks? = How many green toothpicks? = How many blue toothpicks? = How many yellow toothpicks? =

What color was the background paper? Why might we expect the yellow toothpicks to get picked the least? Is being a yellow toothpick on a yellow background a good trait or a bad trait? What color would natural selection favor?
